Biography. Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) was a German-French composer and cellist, whose father was the cantor in the Cologne synagogue. Jacques Offenbach's works were France's answer to Gilbert and Sullivan's English operettas. Offenbach was the seventh of ten children.
